The biting cold wind whipped around the APC as they drove through the rubble that had once been a small village on the outskirts of town “When did the wolves begin destroying buildings?” Kana looked out of the narrow slit “This is not what they normally do.”
“Right, all of this is very recent and something we haven’t seen them do. The only survivor of this massacre said that they seemed even more violent than usual.” Nikolai remarked while he finished loading several magazines with rounds “Between the filth corrupting Fawn and now this, we’ll be on the face of a losing battle if something isn’t done.”
She closed her eyes, listening to shrieks and cries of those spirits in the area crying out for someone to help them. Asking about long dead relatives or how they’ll live now. “Alright, we’ll need to set up a perimeter on the north edge of the village. Your intel being correct, they’ll be holding up within the mountains.” Sitting down on the seat across from Nikoli “Only one survivor out of forty?” her tone is close to sympathy “I feel that there’s something else going on here. Something just doesn’t feel right.”
The APC came to a sudden halt “this is far as we can go Ranger.” the driver shouted over his shoulder. “We’ll fan out, short bursts and check your targets.” Kana jammed the rear hatch release hard. The door swung down out into the fresh fallen snow letting the frigid wind into the vehicle.
With each step her footsteps crunched loudly in the eerily quiet. She signaled for the rest of the Draculesti to spread out in two man teams. The road in front of the APC was choked with the remnants of several buildings into what seemed to be a hastily constructed road block.
Keeping her focus trained down the stock of the M16A4 as she moved over to the remains of a burnt out vehicle. Kneeling against the cold metal she peeked up over the shell as Nikolai followed behind her and was keeping an eye on their six “there’s no movement forward of this position, we’ll move thirty yards over to that barn there.” Kana whispered to him while pointing to their next destination.
They moved in perfect synchronization, leap froging positions as they moved towards the barn. Kana passed by a ransacked stand. A small girl roughly in her mid teens was crying into her knees as she rocked back and forth on the frozen ground. As Kana and Nikolai came closer the girl stared up to Kana, the large, deep claw marks across her neck confirmed to Kana the girl’s fate. “I’m sorry this has happened to you, can you tell me anything about the creature?” Kana whispered as she knelt next to the spirit. Nikolai kept watch of the surrounding area as he waited for her to finish.
“They appeared without warning, moving without purpose and killed anyone they found.” the girl wiped her eyes with the back of her hand “Their eyes, not like the others.” she looked up to Kana “it hurt so much…” With a heavy sigh Kana nodded “It is something different to every person. Thank you, I promise to return and help you continue on but I must leave now.”
Tapping Nikoli’s shoulder Kana signaled for him to follow. They stopped just outside of the barn, leaning against some rubble “I’m not going to ask what that was all about but, was it something helpful?” Nikolai knew about all manner of supernatural and he had heard of Kana’s ability through rumors “yes, it was.” was all she replied with.
Small pops of gunfire broke out nearby “Come on, sounds like Markov's team found something.” They made their way quickly to the source of the gunfire. Nikoli was correct, as they rounded around the corner of a small house they could see Markev and his shadow, a small woman with a scar across her cheek firing indiscriminately at a shape moving just inside the close tree line. “What are you firing at?” Kana shouted as she jumped next to Markov “a god damn wolf, ma’am.” he said curtly.
Suddenly a crash from behind them drew Kana’s and the other three’s attention. Bursting through the walls of a nearby home. The wolf howled as it quickly gained ground towards their position. The woman next to Markev screamed as she opened fire on the beast, emptying a full magazine with no effect against it.
Kana lifted her rifle only to stop, she looked upon the onrushing creature with wide eyes. It’s form clouded in a shimmering blanket of grey and red color that it’s various presence hurt her senses. The screams that rode on the beasts howls strained her hearing. Her efforts in trying to block out most of the hellish sights and sounds only fueled it’s charge as round after round entered the beast. It crashed into the woman first, it’s teeth sinking into her shoulder as blood spewed out as it had bit into an artery. Markev shouted something in Romanian as he slapped another magazine into his rifle and unloaded it directly into the beasts side.
Breaking free of her hypnosis Kana pulled her modified Wahaika from it’s sheath strapped to her back. The tattoo’s across her body began to glow the subdued green tone as she called upon the chaos magic. She ran headlong to the wolve’s hind quarters, swinging the Wahaika which glowed the same green and had on its bladed edge, wisps of chaos magic that trailed slightly behind it. The wahaika sliced through toughened sinew and muscle with ease as the bone shattered before the leg fell away from the beast in a shower of blood.
The wolf howled in extreme pain and rage, it released the body from its maw and turned towards Kana. Snapping at her with failing strength as she spun around its attacks to swing upwards with the wahaika into its neck. Again the weapon found very little resistance as it entered the wolf’s neck. The beast’s clouded form shuddered as what ever had been possessing it began to fade. The snow around the group was stained in the dark crimson of the beasts blood. Kana pulled slid the wahaika out from the creature. Her uniform mostly covered in the blood of the wolf “Find the other one that you were firing on, these are not normal wolves. They are possessed.” Kana watched as the spirit possessing the wolf faded to nothing, leaving only the dying wolf. She knelt down next to it, her hand caressing the matted fur “go, your fight here is done.” She stayed with it for a moment longer after it had passed on.
Standing she flicked the wahaika, droplets of blood landed on the snow at her feet “We have a new threat out here. These wolves are being possessed by spirits. They are much more dangerous and brutal.” She looks out to the treeline as more shapes move about in the shadows. Her eyes flicker as green wisps ring her eyes “We must make a tactical retreat, this will require a heavy hand in dealing with them.”
