Danger in Seoul

Requine

Requineverse DM-in-chief
Game Master
The Dawnbreak - now Marli’s group - cell in Seoul is extremely... American. A row of suburban looking homes on a side street. Community members laugh and play and mingle, their lawns becoming one big friendly commune.

Cassandra Havelock stands a far distance away, just close enough to see them but not enough to approach or be approached, hands shoved in pockets, rocking on her heels, squinting.

Marli appears from one of the buildings, wearing her typical black overcoat and could be seen walking towards the center of the community.

Cass watches her, still hesitant to approach. “This is such a bad fuckin’ idea.” She mutters to herself.

“Yeah. Particularly because we don’t know her agenda, or who she works for.” Blake is suddenly there, his deep voice pitched for her ear only. He’s wearing the leather overcoat over a dark suit and shirt, but she can tell he’s been in a fight. A cut on his face, still fresh and starting to heal, and the slight smell of gunpowder.

Two members of the crowd walk over to Marli as she talks to them, they seem to be normal which is the same could be seen of the rest of the people around. Marli turns to stare down the street at the two.

“Well, that’s our fuckin’ cue.” Cass sighs, glancing at Blake. “Might as well get this over with.” She heads over. She’s wearing a coat that covers her from knee to shoulder. As she approaches, the cultists on the lawns scatter. Before long, Marli and Tom - the head of this cell - are the only ones left.

“O Glorious Marli, she who leads us, that’s - that’s the Knight-Captain, from the video, she’s probably here to -” Tom’s voice is strangled.

“She is here on my request.” Marli doesn’t turn to Tom “The video was simple propaganda to instill fear and lies.”

“Hello Jericho and Cass, welcome.”

“Good day, Ms. Anderson.” Blake pretty much ignores Tom.

Cass is grinding her teeth, but she manages a short nod of greeting. “This your uh, center of operations?”

She pauses, looks at Tom who is currently staring at her with a white face, and takes a step forward. “Boo!”

Tom flees.

Staring right to cass “You are not making this easy as they are already on edge.” Motioning behind her “We should convene inside and speak. There is a lot of information that we’ll need to go through for this to work.”

“Oh, come on, let me have a little fun.” Cass grouses, but moves to follow Marli inside.

Blake looks around for any onlookers, and finding none, follows them inside.

Blake, you find the inside of the home to be - unsettling. It’s been built to look exactly like a slice of Americana, except it’s just... not quite right. It’s like the Uncanny Valley of something very much like your hometown, and it’s putting you slightly on edge. Cass and Marli are obviously, unaffected. The Knight-Captain scowls at every cultist she passes with a face like a thunder cloud as Marli leads them to the office.

“Ms. Anderson, what is this placed supposed to be?”

“I am to understand that it was to instill a sense of home for those that settled here.” Marli moves into the office waiting as they move in. Shutting the door she takes a device out from a coat pocket, setting it down on the desk nearby “We may discuss things without worry of any prying ears.”

“Before I got... sent to West Virginia, you had a plan for infiltrating the Orochi compound. I’m assuming we need a new plan now?” Cass asks, rubbing her hands together anxiously.

Suddenly, one of the children comes running in. “Mother Marli, Mother Marli!” She starts tugging on your sleeve anxiously.

Blake raises an eyebrow at the honorific.

Cass grimaces and leans in to mutter at Blake: “This is so fucking weird.”

Marli allows the child to lead her.

“There are people coming.” She says solemnly. “A... A lady gave me this.” She gives Marli a crumpled sheet of paper, and then skips off.

Taking the paper Marli begins to read it.

There’s a note in an elegant hand. “The Dragon know Blake is here. Prepare yourselves. -Xue”

“I fought one of their hit squads on the way here… But it sounds like this may get worse. And why would Xue help?”

Cass shrugs. “You tell me, I’ve only met her for like, five minutes.”

“It does not matter, this will be just a simple clean up then and it means you were not as careful in not being seen coming here.” Opening the door of the office Marli walks down the hall “We will see what they want.”

Blake shakes his head as he follows her. “I wasn’t followed. I’m sure of that.”

“Marli, I’m pretty sure what they want is fucking murder.” Cass scrambles to her feet.

There is a knock at the front door.

Stopping, Marli motions to Blake and Cass to hide for the moment.

Blake backs up against a wall, out of sight when the door opens.

Cass presses herself against a wall, opposite Blake, looking incredibly annoyed.

As Marli opens the front door, she sees a monk - lips sewn shut, looking at her with flat eyes, and a younger Asian woman with a sword on her hip.

“Ms. Anderson.” The woman says, flatly. “The Dragon has not yet welcomed you to Seoul, have we?”

“I do not need to be welcomed as it is of no concern in how or what goes on here.” Marli simply looks to the woman without emotion.

“The Dragon disagrees, considering you’re operating... whatever you’re doing on Seoul soil. Speaking of, we are coming in. This requires investigation.”

“Your models would predict that is not the course of action right now. Perhaps another time then.” Marli defiantly stands in the doorway.

Jericho remains silent, motionless as a statue, but ready for what he believes to be inevitable.

“You’ll notice, Ms. Anderson, that we didn’t ask.”

In the back, a window breaks.

Without a sound or any sign of movement MArli disappears into a cloud of filth. Appearing behind the monk. Drawing her twin blades she strikes at his arm.

The monk turns and strikes back, sustaining an injury to his arm but swinging hard at Marli’s face. Cass turns and sprints towards the back, muttering the word “fuck” over and over again. The cultists seem completely practiced for a home invasion - they have seemingly vanished, with only the click of a door closing to signify where they went.

Three Dragon assassins are moving through the house now, with more coming in through whatever entrance they can.

Jericho slams the door into the young woman’s face, meaning to stun her, and if successful snatches her sword from her belt, testing it for balance as the assassins approach.

The monks strike hits her square on the cheek. Keeping the daze from settling in she feigns a strike in a hope to draw him in close.

Jericho is able to get the woman’s sword, and she cries out in anger and surprise. She lunges back at the bigger man, her hands moving quickly in a succession of quick but brutal strikes. In the back, you can hear yelling and smashing as the Knight-Captain stems the tide of assassins.

Blake’s technique becomes obvious, as he blocks most of the hits, concentrating on the ones to vital areas, though a few get through to his chest and abs. He spins to his right, black coat flaring, and aims a strike with the sword pommel to the woman’s right temple, powered by his spin.

She stumbles back, crying out in pain this time. The monk is drawn in by Marli’s ruse, approaching her with a grimace. He may not be able to speak, but his expression makes it clear how deadly serious this is.

Marli grabs at his wrist, twisting it. Her hands quickly rise in temperature as the runes on her blades begin to shimmer. She drives the blade across his neck. She does not smile, or show any kind of emotion. Her movements are precise and refined with her coldness.

The monk crumples forward, blood coming from the new wound on his neck. The woman screams. You take a moment to appreciate the fact that the Dawnbreak control the entire street, or you’ll have to worry about neighbours.

“BEHIND YOU!” You can hear Cass shout. When you turn, you can see she’s maintaining Chaos chains around a couple of assassins, and grappling with another - but two more are charging at you!

Blake turns, drawing a .45 pistol with his left hand, smoothly raising it and fires two shots at the first assassin’s chest. The noise is deafening in the confines of the house. He then readies the blade in his right hand in a defensive stance, ready for the second one.

More assassins are pouring in through side windows - or seemingly popping into existence.

“GOD DAMNIT ARE YOU SERIOUS DEATH SQUADS THIS IS SO DUMB -” The Knight-Captain shouts, running out of sight to try to stop the seeming flood of Dragon attackers. There are three more approaching you two in the front foyer, the monk and one assassin laying dead.

Marli focuses on the woman, concentrating as she pops out and back into existence behind her. She grabs the woman by the back of the neck. The woman could definitely feel the heat from Marli’s grip “You only have one choice in this, recall them now.”

“STAND DOWN!” The woman screams, squirming in Marli’s grasp. The assassins look at her, surprised, and then drop their swords, raising their hands. They clearly don’t agree, but they do obey.

Blake remains ready with both blade and pistol, keeping his eyes on the assassins.

More assassins enter the room - unarmed, hands up, moving very slowly. One of them begins speaking rapidly in Korean. The woman yells back in the same language. They look at each other and nod, slowly walking backwards. One by one, the assassins leave the home, leaving it quiet.

Cass emerges from a room with a bloody nose and a look of confusion. “What the hell -”

“I’ll go make sure they’re gone,” Blake says curtly, and exits the house to take a quick look around the neighborhood.

Sure enough, they’ve vanished - which is appropriate enough, considering that they’re pretty close to ninjas. You are, despite being aware - relatively vulnerable to a surprise attack. But there’s nothing.

“Thank you. You have mistaken in that things here are under your control. Perhaps you should re-evaluate your models.” Marli keeps a firm grip on the woman’s neck. The smell of singeing hair could be detected around them.

Jericho returns and nods at them. “I got two workouts today, and it’s not even noon.” He says to the woman. “This is not productive.”

“Please let me go.” The woman says through gritted teeth. “There are three of you, and one of me. And I am unarmed.”

“Two and a half.” Cass mutters, holding one hand up to her bleeding nose while searching for paper towel.

“I believe you, unfortunately you have intruded into an area that you should have not. You were looking for him?” Marli lifts the woman’s head to look over to Jericho. “Your thread has ended here.”

“No, no, listen to me - you have to listen to me. The Dragon has been aware of your presence in this city - our city - since you arrived. When Mr. Blake arrived, it was just... it was considered two birds, one stone -”

“Let her go, Ms. Anderson.” Blake is expressionless.

The coldness between them could have chilled someone to the bone. She releases her grip on the woman “She is your responsibility.”

Jericho nods at Marli in acceptance. He then offers the woman her sword, hilt first. “One chance. Ambush me all you want. I know why you hunt me, even if you don’t. But don’t return here. Next time you all die.” His deep voice is cold as ice.

The woman looks at Blake, then the dead monk on the floor, snatches her sword away, and runs down the street, not looking back once.

Cass just sighs. “Marli, can you help me find the paper towels, please. Fucking Seoul. Fuckin’ Dragon!”

“Welcome to my world,” Blake mutters as he reloads his pistol.

“Your way is, different.” Marli softly says as she directs Cass back inside “That woman is now on borrowed time.”

“I almost told you to go ahead and kill her,” Blake shrugs, locking the door. “Maybe I made a mistake. “But if she relays the message…”

“If I were you, Marli, I’d be the hell out of Seoul ASAP. Having the eyes of any of the Big Three on you is bad news. Murdering a monk on top of that?” Cass finishes wiping her face clean of blood, looking more irritated than actually hurt. “Which brings us back to square one. Do we have a plan?”

“Before the unforeseen interruption, we do. We are to infiltrate the lab in which these demons are being experimented on.” Marli moves into the kitchen as she speaks “Seoul is a simple stepping stone. A path if you will. We will have twenty volunteers to aid us in our mission.” turning to look at both Cass and Blake “That is if you accept.”

“Do we need so many?” He asks her frankly.

“We do if they are to believe in that an uprising is taking place. An uprising of one of their cells against the rest of the Dawnbreak for reasons of that they have lost faith in the old leadership.”

Cass drums her fingers against the kitchen counter. “Shit. That’s actually... really clever. Distract whatever’s left of the Dawnbreak after Miami and set up a little base of operations in one blow?”

“Works for me,” Blake nods. “A fine diversionary tactic.”

“Are these people just going to be causing a distraction here, in Seoul?”

“They will be moving out later tonight in setting up an outreach center at one of the locations previously destroyed by your operations.” opening a drawer Marli removes a folder “You will find the details of such actions in here. They have been replicated to several others as to lend credence to their actions.” She holds it out to Cass “Believe me in that is not the first Dragon monk to die by my hand. Remember in that I have connections within the factions that help design any kind of, cover up.”

“So… when do we go in? I’ll see what kind of sat imaged the Eye has on our target.”

Cass gingerly takes the folder. “Yeah. Looks like we got some prep to do. You sure you’ll be safe here, Marli? Until we can reconvene and start this shit?” She suddenly laughs. “I promise I won’t get fuckin’ kidnapped this time.”

“We will make our move quite soon Jericho.” she nods to Cass “Unless you wish to be? The location we will be taking over is the one in which you were taken.”

Cass stiffens and the laughter goes out of her voice. “I’m not going back there.”

“We don’t have to.” Blake squeezes her shoulder. “Marli’s… followers… will go there. We’ll raid the lab.”

“Alright. Alright.” Cass relaxes. “Okay, Marli. I’ll be in touch. You do your part. I’ll do mine.”

She grabs the Agartha conduit, and hesitates. “...Maybe. Maybe get the kids out of here, eh?”

Jericho nods. “Good idea. Let us know when you’re ready, Ms. Anderson, or if you need anything.”
