Major updates are done! We've squashed the nastier bugs, but there are probably a few smaller ones still scurrying about. Send us a DM on Twitter (@lowerworldtsw) or to @Custodian/@Voltigeur on this site if you catch one!
We'll be tweaking the site's appearance and updating guides as the month goes on. :)
"And there is not a very good signal out here, so no Google Maps to help us." Marcos musters as convincing a sheepish smile as he's able as he pulls out his phone.
"So... you lost a jacket, your only map, and the safety instructions. Huh." The officer didn't say it out loud, but his face was eloquent on what he thought of unprepared hikers. "OK look, I have a map in the car. I can't lend it to you, but I can point you to the nearest points of interest and then you can decide what to do from here. How's that sound?"
Sam stayed quiet, and observed the police officer. He noticed the facial expression and smirked slightly. But mostly, he observed the man's behavior towards those in the group, how he interacted with people. He made his own observations for later.
Klaus had no words. None at all. First, his fellow hikers decided to roll about in the dirt for authenticity, and then their story is they lost the map. He never even managed a response to Craft past a small wave with all of the overwhelming insanity that quickly distracted him.
He fumed in the back. Couldn't they have at least made a convincing story with the excuse about the map? Perhaps one that explained half of them being filthy and ill-equipped? Klaus kept his fury and shame to himself.
He tried and failed.
Nothing could keep the embarrassment from his face. Nothing.
The officer grinned back. Evidently he was not all stern looks and disapproval. "I might take you up on that, if only to hear the story of your disastrous day. But come on, let me show you the roads."
He went back to his car and pulled out a map from the glove compartment, which he spread over the hood. "So, you lot are here..." He pressed a finger over an unremarkable spot on the map, "and Hemlock Falls is in this direction. Just follow the road for an hour walking or so. Can't really miss it. It's a bit early, but Rosie should be up to fix you breakfast and coffee by the time you get there."
The officer pointed to another two spots on the map, marked by a drawing of a bonfire. "There's a good camping spot south of here. It's not on the trail, but it's much closer than the Falls, if you don't feel like walking that much. Either way, when you decide to get back on the trail, we can get one of the boys to accompany you to this other camp north of town. They don't get to meet many new people, so they might even volunteer for the job."
James sighed as he watched all this unfold. He was not a fan of lawmen and he was resisting the urge to shoot on sight. Best to keep in the background. Besides this one seemed way to conveniant for his own good.
Had walked over with the officer still keeping up her act nodding as the officer explained. "Hmm... Ah I see. Well least we're not too far off the route. Thank you for helping us."
There was a crackling noise from the radio in the car, followed by a "Control to car one, come in". The officer cast an apologetic look at Diana and climbed back into the car, muttering back and forth with the person on the other side of the call.
As the officer returned to the car to respond to the call, Craft shook his head.
Looking to the other people in the ragtag team, Craft asked the question about what to do next.
"Looks like we've got a few options. Food and gear in town... which is likely to be where we'll gather a bit more information about... things. But getting someone eager to talk to outsiders could be beneficial too, if someone wants to 'guide' us to the camp north of town, we might be able to get some details from him. So, how do you folks wanna handle this?"
"Well, umm, he did say we could probably get someone to show us when we were ready. I'd figure we could, if we want I mean, visit the town first, then after we get, uhh, resupplied then see about the guide." Molly occasionally glances back towards the police car, even though nothing she says is particulary damning.
"Well, I got a lil cash, come up with a list and I'll hit the stores - thrift, grocery, and then if need be hardware? You can find a lotta great stuff at second hand stores ya know? I once got a really nice waffle iron and a brand new Barney doll for a cousin. You can pay me back later, anyone wanna come with? Buddy system an all that." She checked her phone, any hope of coverage with the old Dragon loaner?
Mat frowned a little when the police officer went back into his car to talk. How could he not think about bringing something to spy on the police radio? That's basic stuff. Instead, he tried to read on the officer's lips, or to catch a few words.
"We should ask the guide or whoever will accompany us about stories to talk about around a campfire. Scary stuff and shit." Mat nods "Maybe we'll get the beginning of a lead that way."
He patted his pocket to make sure he had his wallet with him. "I'll tag along for shopping if only few of us go."
The officer was covering his mouth with the radio receiver, so Mat and Diana didn't get a very good chance of figuring out what he was saying. They did get a curious stare when he noticed both looking inside the police car, though.
After a while he climbed out of the car again and addressed the group, hands on his hips. "Well, I wanted to offer you a ride into town - well, some of you, it wouldn't give a good example if I tried to cram you all into a single car - but duty calls me elsewhere. Did you get a good look at that map?"
Marcos idly rubs his chin as he listens to the others spout off ideas.
"Let's go into town for the night," Marcos says. "We've had a very long day getting lost in the forest, and just can't wait to see a shower and a real bed again, no?" Marcos winks, thinks a moment, then adds, "Maybe we can visit the local bar, too. We might overhear something interesting..." He nods approvingly at Mathieu's suggestion, too. "Then once we've had rest, we can ask for a tour."
Marcos wanders over to the police cruiser and snaps a few photos of the map. He has one of his own, of course, but since they're all supposed to be playing the part of clueless campers...
"I did. Thank you, officer." Marcos smiles friendlily. Then a thought strikes him. "Hm. If we get in trouble again, what is the best way to reach you?"
"911 if it's an actual emergency. If it's not that urgent, you can call the police station." He gave Marcos a phone number. "Actually I'd appreciate it if you dropped a note later, just to let me know that you reached town or the trail fine. Ask of deputy Taliaferro."
The deputy looked around to see if there were other pressing questions. Otherwise, he looked ready to jump in the car and go wherever he'd been called to.
