[RP2] The trail to the radio tower

Sarah Whittaker

Well-Known Member
Sarah fully turns around and looks at Mat. No faux-innocence this time, instead meaningful eye flickers towards the more nervous members of the party. And the mouthed words "not helping."

Rourke's expression was neutral but he barely resisted rolling his eyes when he heard the 'duh' in Sarah's voice. He noted in the future to be more clear for the young tour guide. He kept his eyes on the woods but, for now, rationalized the sound to the natural wildlife. He kept his eyes and ears on the tree lines.

Rourke was a bit of a paranoid son of a bitch. Typical forest animals or no.

Craft remained silent through the discussion of local wildlife and their proximaty to town. The way some of his fellow 'hikers' responded to whatever they noticed was not too surprising. Noting their guides' reaction to the mention of wolves and bears, he had to appreciate her effort to downplay their mention.

"I'd assume most animals out here would give us a wide berth anyways, we're a pretty decently sized group, and making a bit of noise."

He grins quickly, hands in his pockets.

Sarah nods to Craft, smiling. "Pretty much, yes." She resumes simply hiking. Walk to the radio tower. Watch for the interesting rock formation that comes up soon. Point out the epiphyte partway up a nearby tree.

Listen for abnormal sounds or silences; just in case there IS a wolf pack or a bear nearby.

The rest of the walk to the tower was uneventful. Occasionally one or two of them heard some more rustling from the trees or the undergrowth, but they never spotted any animals, nor did Mat’s magic pick up on anything supernatural.

Along the way they also encountered a first aid cache, which looked like a miniature version of a wooden house, complete with triangular roof. The cache doors had several locks on them and two signs: one sporting a red cross on a white field, and the other stating to only break the seal in case of necessity.

Eventually the radio tower came into view, a tall, metallic structure made with the explicit purpose of towering above the trees and nearby hills. As they got closer, the trees became sparser and the view opened into a big field.

At the base of the tower was a simple rectangular building. It looked old but, just like the tower, there were signs that it had been renovated recently: there were solar panels on top, and a small silo and a generator on the back.
Behind the tower were also two cars, a pickup and a utility vehicle, parked at the end of what was presumably the paved drive they had seen before by the creek.

While trip up is nervewracking and embarassing, the radio tower itself was kinda interesting. While not an expert on the subject, as a science geek, she knew the basics in how radio waves worked.

I still think the idea that you could tune a bee to pick up supernatural phenomenon could work kinda like a radio tower.

The idea of course was based off the buzzing that bees could sometimes hear, plus some interesting research she had discovered about using radio waves in ways to connect with ghosts. She wondered for a moment if maybe that was what had happened here. A minor spirit managed to mess with a radio signal that Venice then picked up?

Taking the note of the structure that lay ahead, Craft was a bit surprised to see what had obviously been more recent updates to the building. He was even more interested at the fact two vehicles were parked behind the radio tower.

Looking towards their guide, he asks: "Do people regularily man the radio tower?"

Sarah laughs and nods. "It's one of the town's ... pride and joys." Yes, awkward sentence there. Oh well. "It's part of the firewatch system, which matters. But it's also the local radio channel."

"Oh, it's not a 24/7 radio channel like cities have, but twice a day it's local news and community announcements and everything else, and then the local playlist."

Marcos, for one, is beyond relieved to have finally reached flat ground. He leans against the nearest structure that doesn't look like it's going to fall apart at the slightest touch and downs all the remaining water in his canteen in one go.

He's happy to let the others do the talking, for now, while he catches his breath. But something that Sarah says catches his attention.

Not a 24/7 radio channel... Hm. When did Araci say those signals were transmitted...? If only there were a dilligent notetaker in their-...

Oh, right. Molly. It's always the quiet ones.

After making a mental note to check in with Molly later, Marcos turns his attention to Sarah. "So there are no late-night informercials? That is a shame."

"So, is a there a broadcast going on right now then?" Molly asks, obviously looking at the two parked vehicles as she says it.

Rourke hung back listening as everyone talked about the radio tower. He made a few mental notes of Sarah's information, then he gave the radio tower the once over, and headed in that direction, intent on going inside. "Mind if I take look?"

Sarah checks her watch, and thinks for a moment. "I've never actually worked the radio. Not a local-enough local, you see." She grins, apparently there's some sort of in-joke there. Then closes her eyes a moment, and says "At this hour it should be the playlist, but whoever's there is making sure everything works, and collecting any news and information for the evening announcements." She opens her eyes again in the middle of that, and looks at the cars. "That would be .... um ....." She then shakes her head. "Nope. Not cars I know."

She nods to Rourke. "Can't hurt to ask, at least. And I'm sure they'll be pleased as punch to show off." A pause, then "And as I said, I'm a local from the next-door town. If you're that interested in the radio station, the folks inside will know ten times as much as me."

"I'm curious about the tower - and the broadcast - as well."

Craft nods as the suggestion to set up camp is made. It would be useful to be in the area if someone is coming to the tower and sending out the mysterious signal in the early hours of the morning.

"I can help with the prepping camp after a quick chat with the radio experts inside..."

"I believe there is no camp site anywhere close however." Mat added "I'm not sure they would like us camping in the wild when there are spaces made for this." He looked at Sarah, hoping she'd confirm that.

Sarah nods. "I'm sure noone would mind if we had lunch in this area, but the campsite is down the path there, near the Firs. It's .. " She checks her watch, names the actual time (some time near midday). "Should be plenty of time for a tour of the radio station, a lazy walk to the camp or the motel, and either a leisurely setup or ... well, checking into rooms."

She looks at the group. "And if anyone's too sore, or has a pack that's turned out too much heavier, there just might be someone willing to give you a lift." She nods towards the cars. "But you'd have to ask - I can't promise for someone else! But no harm in asking."
