[RP4] It was a dark and stormy night

Craft squints and tries to see if there's anything more to the triangle that just the red light, "Is there anywhere we should be seeing something like that?" He didn't just mean anywhere in Hemlock Falls.

"Did we somehow get turned around..."

He pulls his compass from his pocket, but hesitates to look away from the neon light to get a reading.

The needle in the compass is a bit more wobbly than it should be, but still steady enough to show that the triangle is pointing west-southwest, which is where the barracks should be compared to the Firs if they've managed to keep a straight line so far.

To examine the triangle in more detail, Craft would have to advance towards it.

((Okay. So the soggy ground isn't wrong.))

Sarah also - yes, I know, it's surprising - has a compass. She looks at it, then up again. "We're heading the right way. But this should just be farmland. Not .... " She makes a kind of pointing/waving gesture. "..... whatever that is."

Craft cants his head towards Sarah, with a wry grin.

"You mean neon triangles don't regularly appear around the area?"

He wondered, for a moment, just where this would land in a scale of oddness. Common sense would dictate NOPEing away from such a thing. But they were going in the right direction... and someone might need help.

"Well... I suppose we shouldn't let random geometric shapes keep us from looking for Dave."

He looked back to the shape, and recalled all the times he had emails come in of incredible claims without any sort of real evidence. So he pulled out his cell phone and took a quick video.

With a deep breath he slowly took a step in the direction they were travelling.

The triangle, oddly, seems to remain the same size and distance for several steps, until suddenly a second triangle appears behind it, at which point the first one starts to fade in brightness and size. If they keep going on, a third triangle will appear before the second and so on, creating a surreal, odd trail for them to follow.

Sarah starts to shiver, and pulls her rain-poncho around herself. Her voice wavers. "D-do you know w-what's happening?"

She turns her head, looking behind them. Should she run away? She ... did survive the ghosts, right?

Craft shakes his head, "No. This is definitely a new one for me."

He pauses for a minute then turns to face Sarah, "I know you've already gotten more than you signed up for when you offered to guide a bunch of lost hikers around town. Ideally we'd have come through town and left you, and everyone else, blissfully unaware of stuff like... this."

"I wouldn't blame you if you went back to the Firs and forgot any of this ever happened. I sometimes wish I could."

He looks back to the triangle that seems to be guiding them.

"I've gotta keep going though."

He runs his fingers through his damp hair and is at least thankful he's never heard of a malevolent triangle.

Sarah shudders, but then says quietly "Dave is out here, though. Somewhere." She looks at Craft. "What if he ran into this weird shit - in the state he's in?"

She adjusts her head-torch, and then takes her keyring out of her pocket and uses the LED torch to give her even more light. Searches around, lighting shadows large enough for Dave to maybe be hiding in. And sticking close to Craft.

Marcos — who has apparently been snoozing or very (im)patiently waiting for the newest episode of Game of Thrones to buffer on his phone — raises his hand in greeting as he finally catches up with the rest of the group.

"Any sign of him?"

He glances past Sarah to Craft, asking him the same question with a look, but his attention quickly turns to the mysterious floating... thing a few meters away from the other man.

"You're... seeing this, yes?" He gestures in the general direction of the floating things, which he rarely lets out of his sight, even as he shines his own flashlight into the shadows to help Sarah with her search.

"Only crazy people see giant neon triangles Marcos." Craft chuckles, "So, perhaps we're all crazy."

Thinking about the absurdity of it all, "We're also sort of following it... so..."

Indeed, no Dave. But if they move toward the next triangle, they'll see that the effect repeats: the triangle in front of them fades, and more appear behind. Soon there is a trail of neon triangles leading them through the fog and rain, and soon enough they're back in sight of the road, a short distance from the barracks. When they turn back to look at the trail of triangles that led them there, though, they've disappeared, as if they'd never been there.

Craft stares ahead, at the road, then looks to Sarah, "Is this where we were trying to go?"

Sarah peers through the fog and rain looking for the landmarks she needs, then nods. "The old mine barracks should be just there - probably only just out of sight."

She points in their direction, and then searches the road and road-edge-muck for Dave's footprints.

Craft directs his flashlight to the road, sweeping slowly back and forth, though he's uneasy... Did the triangles guide them here to find Dave? Or for some other reason.

The barracks are two old buildings on the right side of the road leading to the mine. They are three floors high, more or less contemporary of the Harper house in their foundations, but they were evidently renovated in the 1950s when the town tried to reopen the mine.

Despite the dark and the rain there are only a few lights on in the buildings, and Sarah explains not many people live there these days: mostly single persons who work at the mill.

As for tracks, it's a bit hard to figure out what's a boot print and what's just a depression in the damp terrain, but Sarah estimates that someone might have gone through there recently an in the direction of the mine or barracks.

When Rourke realized that everyone was coming with, he waited for them. He kept pace with the group, and since he was more or less use to walking around in less than ideal weather, it wasn't too hard for him to navigate the terrain. That was until Sarah held out her arm to stop them for moving forward and that strange light was up ahead. He listed as Craft and Sarah spoke. He was not as well verse in this stuff as Craft, and if that dude didn't know what was going on, he was guessing that was not a good sign but he followed the others lead.

Then they were back on the road, and the triangles were gone. Rourke didn't like this, not one bit. He was relatively new to this shit, but he knew that rarely was the universe helpful. Definitely not with bright neon signs either. He took a deep breath. Rourke bent down to take a closer look at the tracks that Sarah had examined, and then looked up at the barracks. "Lets like there might be someone home." He said when Sarah explained that only a few lived out here.
