Getting involved with The Secret World RP

Most people new to The Secret World setting would more than likely have jumped in-game first. Mostly there are many avenues that a lot of people would generally suggest.

  • The Horned God in London is a major hub of general pub role play. Everyone visits or passes through this locale daily. Usually you can sit back and enjoy some interesting role play with a random stranger or start a repertoire with someone and meet up here to talk about the latest zombie slayings or any other thing.
  • There are forum based role play here that you can read through and jump in on. Within the Groups directory, we have many games that anyone can join in on and even start your own.
  • Throughout the week there are almost daily gatherings of role players in-game that get together while listening to an online radio station. These shows are provided by some rather awesome people from Radio Free Gaia and Gridstream. Each have different shows and DJ's that host depending the day.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, there are countless ways in finding role play here at The Lower World and while in-game as well. Now, I know I know I left things out and I'm looking to everyone to offer their insights and thoughts to add into this thread.

Just slightly ahead of the curve, Chuck.
Can't overstate how much Twitter
#tsw
and
#hivehum
helped me because I had got bored of TSW as I had thought that the RP at the horned god, type /dance RP or the cabal-centric RP that seemed to be going on was the only thing going — and I just plain left out of boredom I prefer real life bar/club chat - I love story and plots and that's how The Secret World was advertised to me, I felt let down until I found out about the HUGELY RICH stuff going on outside the game

(Though the tswrp mod (J.mp/tsw-rp2) (or J.mp/tsw-rp3 for more info) helps a lot with being able to read peoples' profiles for ingame RP though, which can be good sometimes - actually one of the best RPs I've had was at a Morninglight event I saw organised on Twitter but actually then took place ingame)
(The ingame mod is how I found out about the huge community "hidden" on Twitter originally, because someone had thoughtfully linked theirs)

If I had known about the stuff that got organised on there even before this site existed, things might have been different, I dunno! I think it's important to use tags on twitter so that there's a general "category" that people who don't have connections can check in and look to see stuff going on in, so that people who aren't in the get a trail of breadcrumbs :)

The official roleplaying forum (J.mp/tsw-rp) should also probably get posted to more even if only to point at stuff, it looks so empty and sad (I'm as guilty of this as anyone), and I don't think a lot of newer people have any idea how much stuff is getting organised elsewhere when they look on it's barrenness, probably a lot of people do the same as I did and end up wandering off, which is sad...

I am REALLY glad of finding out about the open-to-the-public stuff that gets organised on both Twitter (usually with Google Docs) and on this site, it's so much of a change in atmosphere, I love it :) I actually think it's better than the "ARG" stuff because it's genuinely real-seeming, believable stories, and not just puzzles that don't really make much sense why there is a puzzle unless there's a cartoon villain around :) I think Webcrafter and Requine in particular pretty much brought The Secret World to life and made it what it should have been from day 1, to reach it's actual potential - in an ideal world maybe Funcom wouldn't have concentrated so much on the silly human equation ARG people and internet radio stations and instead helped with something like this, it's weird to think how differently maybe things could have turned out, or after so many years it just needed you lot, the few people working together at the right time to make something happen I guess :)

I just realised I said a lot more than I meant to when i started that post haha... basically:
1. Funcom's community reps pretty much ignore the roleplay community other than occasionally turning up to seemingly get real-life drunk and type /dance (whilst the developers I've talked to are pretty awesome) - it's pretty f'ing appalling to be honest that your site has received no promotion when you've been going over a year, when the most banally stupid things get posted sometimes...
2. If we don't make a conscious choice to be open then many people just never find anything and end up leaving because there's no real advertisement ingame or on the forums, so people that aren't already in the know don't find much of interest, leave, and everyone loses cos sometimes some of the more casual people can be really good writers also!
(the dance things can be ok sometimes, but I really feel like the pure AMOUNT of them can kind of smother/spam out people trying to organise more serious RP and gives people a false impression like I had which made me end up making me get bored because I thought that's all there was going)

I think spots like this one are more welcoming to folks simply because, in a way, you only join a site like it in order to tell and craft stories. Otherwise, you stick to other spots to discuss PVP, mission walk-through, etc. I also feel there's more room to express yourself here without imagined big-dogs looking over your shoulder all the time (just my own feelings).

I have been welcomed here since day one, and owe a lot to the kindness and willingness to write with me that Requine has shown.

I think Twitter is a great way to get connected and forums like we have here are a perfect way to hone a character, IMO. I recently got involved with one of the RP's here (Hidden Dragon) and have been enjoying it quite a bit -- something I would never have done without being encouraged buy the great staff here -- so I can't suggest something like that enough.

Very good points you've brought up Kisikillillake a lot of what people generally do is through Twitter. The TSWRP mod is another great tool and one that I hoped would get a facelift and get supported more by its developer.

Yeah, the person that made it Acenth (twitter @tylermcdowall or acenthian on Skype) kind of disappeared as seems to happen a lot with these sort of things, it's really important to have a backup plan in case things come up probably... I've heard of a few people like Mornington (Peluned), Mumbo-Jimbo and Fiction4Life (BliesOnthePrize/Lady_Grae) having profiles that get broken and can't be updated even with full on deleting and re-making the character to try fix it in Peluned's case :(

Hopefully since the site is with that curse site it will be up a while though, it would be really nice if it was able to be picked up by the community and carried on in case it breaks more in future Updates I agree :(
I know nothing about this stuff but it looks like the programming code is readable at least

This is a really great topic. Thanks for sharing! I will keep this in mind to point people this way for good info. Twitter and sites like this and TSW-RP.com really have helped me to get in touch with other role players, and especially outside the more limited scope of the radio shows I do and RP.
